Do you want to hear about our experience? I'll try to make a long story short.
I had some serious concerns today. I know it was the first day and its a brand new school. They are still trying to get all the kinks figured out but here's what happened.
I went to pick up Sy. The line for a visitor pass was really long (understandable) so I waited outside along the building for the teachers to bring their kids out. They have a system set up that was explained to us that they would have a member of their staff come to your car and get your child and take them to their class and bring them out to you after school. But I waited on the side of the building because I wanted to make sure I was there right when he walked out. I see one little girl get scared and real panicked. She got separated from her teacher when they were lining up and that panicked me! They got her where she needed to be but for that moment, it was scarey. I watched as each teacher brought her class out and they were finding the parents that went with their children. My son's teacher finally comes out with her class. I watch each child come out, waiting for mine. I don't see him. The next teacher comes out with her class. I approach the teacher saying "Where is Sy?" "Oh, he's getting ready to ride the bus" was her response. I proceed to tell her that I put on the form his dad or myself will be picking him up and he will NEVER be riding the bus. I head inside the building to get to the multipurpose room to find Sy. It is like a madhouse in there (also, understandable that there are many childrem, staff, and parents). This is just from my perspective. I ask one of the staff about my son and he tells me that the kids getting ready to go on the bus would be in the corner area and he points in that direction. I walk over there and do not see him anywhere. I couldn't find him. Did they lose him? One of the girls from my ward is a volunteer there and I guess she had seen me waiting outside and when she went in there and saw he was in the area where the kids would get on the bus, she took his hand and was going to escort him to me. When I saw them, I knelt down to hug Sy and just started balling. I was so shook up . . . and so relieved. He is only 4 years old, and this is his first day of kindergarten. It all ended well. Thank heavens. I just can't imagine if he had ended up on some bus driving to one of the surrounding cities. I know these things happen but I need to know my son will never be put on a bus. Plus I was worried because people were everywhere. And Sy was apparently very excited to "ride the bus" because his teacher told him he was going to. I just worry because he is too trusting. And especially at school. He's trying to be a good boy and listen to what he's told. So, if some man or woman had walked into the gym, and told him "Ok, lets get you on the bus, come with me, we'll get you the best seat." He would have gone and I'd never see him again. He could have gotten stolen so easily. I know I'm probably just a crazy, somewhat paranoid mom, but it's emotional enough for the mom on the first day of kindergarten, and that experience didn't help.
But he had a fun day and loved it. I know he'll do great. Am I wrong? Do I just need to take a chill pill? If any of you are like me, you know it's never good to watch the news. It only makes you more worried about EVERYTHING.
Oh boy. But I'm proud of Sy. He's such a sweet boy . . . and he looks so cute in his uniform.
K- I guess I didn't make a long story short. Sorry :-)
